How to MakeSweet & Salty Chex Mix:

Making a batch of Sweet & Salty Chex Mix can be boiled down to four basic steps:

  1. Combine the mix ingredients
  2. Coat with glaze
  3. Bake, and
  4. Cool

Sounds pretty easy, right? And yes, it truly is as easy as it sounds.

To combine the mix ingredients, grab a big bowl. -- I use a really big plastic container. Then measure out Corn Chex, Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, mini pretzels, and Cheez-It crackers and add them to the bowl. Stir gently to get everything mixed together, being careful not to crush the Chex cereal pieces.

In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, honey, and a bit of kosher salt to make the mix's glaze. Pour the glaze over the Chex cereal mixture and stir gently to get everything coated.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. -- Lining the pan is important, so don't skip this step! This stuff gets sticky as it bakes, and lining the pan saves a lot of elbow grease later at clean-up time.

Then spread the glaze-coated cereal mixture in an even layer on the lined baking sheet.

Pop the pan in the oven and bake it for 30 minutes, stirring the mix every 10 minutes. Stirring allows all of the snack mix to bake evenly, and helps redistribute the glaze to get all pieces nicely coated in its deliciousness.

Once the mix is baked, allow it to cool completely, which will take about 30 minutes. Stir it occasionally, and break up any clumps with your hands.

After the mix is fully cooled, stir in some Reese's Pieces. Then store the mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to about a week.

Recipe FAQs:

  • Can I change the amounts of the ingredients when I make Sweet & Salty Chex Mix?- Yes, you can modify the individual ingredient amounts when making a batch of Sweet & Salty Chex Mix, just be sure to keep the overall total measurement amount the same to ensure there's enough glaze to coat. So for example, if you like Wheat Chex more than Corn Chex, you can increase the amount Wheat Chex and use less Corn Chex.
  • I don't like Reese's Pieces. Can I substitute M&Ms instead?- We love Reese's Pieces' peanut butter flavor in this mix. But absolutely, you can substitute M&Ms for the Reese's Pieces if you'd like. They're both delicious!
  • How long will Sweet & Salty Chex Mix keep?- Sweet & Salty Chex Mix is at its best for about a week after its made. Store it in airtight container at room temperature to keep it fresh.
